Picture Editing in Real-Life
Cover of Reporter Magazine, February 2022 | Images by Prof. Ted Kinsman | Role: Editor
For this project I was tasked with curating and arranging Professor Kinsman's photographs for the cover of Reporter Magazine. My aim for this cover was to find visually interesting pieces of work that would give our audience, the RIT student body, an enticing look at imagery that highlights the work of faculty at the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences.
Working from his web portfolio of approximately 300 images, I was able to narrow that down to around 25. Although only 19 images ended up on the final version, it was good to have alternates to allow for more freedom when it came to the arrangement.
Based on my knowledge of Kinsman and the photo sciences program, I made sure that there was a healthy mix of high speed imaging, x-ray imaging, macro imaging, and slit-scan imaging, which are all common techniques taught in the photo sciences curriculum.

Picture Editing, the Class
Fall 2020 | Professor William Snyder
The following projects were for the Picture Editing course. Curriculum covered such topics as basic design principles, journalistic ethics, and wire service and archival research.

For our final assignment in Picture Editing, we were tasked with telling the story of the last presidential debate between then candidates President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden in a 25-image web slideshow. We were allowed access to the Associated Press image archive to source images for this assignment. Through this project we participated in 'live editing' or selecting images as the event occurs, which entails constant attention to the online image feed as pictures are taken.
For the World Series and women's weightlifting assignments, we were asked to first create a wide edit followed by a tighter edit, working from takes of 300-500 images. After editing we were to create a newspaper mock-up, complete with original headlines and filler text. Emphasis for these two assignments was placed on two qualities: 1) balance between images and text, and 2) balance between images.
